Do I Have Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. Your dentist may be the first to spot the signs, and dental appliances can offer effective treatment.

Recognizing the symptoms

Loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, morning headaches, and daytime exhaustion are classic signs. Partners often notice the pauses in breathing before the patient does.

Dental clues

Dentists can detect signs of sleep apnea including worn teeth from grinding (bruxism), a scalloped tongue, jaw position, and a restricted airway — all visible during a routine exam.

Oral appliance therapy

For mild to moderate sleep apnea, a custom oral appliance repositions the jaw to keep the airway open. Many patients find it more comfortable and convenient than a CPAP machine.

When to seek diagnosis

A sleep study provides a definitive diagnosis. We coordinate with your physician and can fabricate an appliance if appropriate.

The Bottom Line

If you snore loudly or feel exhausted despite a full night's sleep, ask us about a sleep apnea screening.
